Have you noticed how Soren & Sky will leave the eggs unattended?
This is normal and will not have an adverse effect on the hatchlings. First of all, an adult eagle’s body temperature is approximately 102-106 degree F.
Our eagles, both male and female, may have a brood patch. This is when hormones kick in just before egg laying and they lose feathers in their belly region. This enables their warm skin to lay directly on the eggs to keep them toasty. The optimal incubating temp is between 85-105 degrees F, with the optimal egg temp approximately 99 degrees F.
The adults will occasionally leave the eggs to breathe for a period of time, as they don’t want them to overheat, however, they don’t want to leave them unattended for too long, both of which could be detrimental to the developing embryo.
Have you seen Soren and Skye rolling the eggs? This is done every hour or two to ensure even heat distribution, as well as making sure the embryo does not stick to the sides of the egg. This all comes by instinct to the adult eagles, and they know exactly what to do. Nature at its best!
