FR1 eaglet

Congratulations to Soren & Skye!

We Have an Eaglet!

For now, we will be calling the eaglets FR1 and FR2. Happy Birthday, FR1! Keep an eagle eye on the nest for FR2, who we expect to hatch around Saturday, April 5.

Watch our website or subscribe to our emails for details on our naming contest coming soon.

As we eagerly await the first feeding, it’s important to remember that the newly hatched eaglet can go up to 24 hours without food. Just before hatching, the eaglet drinks the embryonic fluid for nourishment. The parents will even feed the newly born eaglet their own saliva until it gets its first bite.

Skye was on the nest for both the first pip and the hatching, but Soren came in for a look both times—looks like a proud Papa!

Soren was a dad last year with another mate, and they fledged 2 eaglets. We don’t know what happened to her, but Skye has been his new mate since this past Fall.

Watchers have commented that Skye is among the youngest females ever seen laying eggs—estimated to be around 4 years old. We weren’t certain she would lay eggs this year, but she has shown incredible instincts.

The nest sits in the middle of 2,000 acres of private property. Last Spring we installed smaller solar and cell powered cameras and had a glimpse of this nest, for the first, and the 2 eaglets that fledged. This January, we installed better cams and hardwired the system to a barn on the property. This is our first season on YouTube and HDOntap.

This is an exciting time to watch!
