A Fledging Surprise: Storm Takes Flight

It all happened so fast—veteran eagle watchers could hardly believe what they were seeing!

On June 10th, Storm made a quick, unexpected hop into the “V” along the tree trunk above the nest. Though brief, both feet left the nest and rails, leading some to officially call it Storm’s first “branching.”

Then, for ten long days, Storm stayed on the nest and only ventured out onto the rails.

Finally, on June 20th, American Eagle Day, things changed dramatically. Storm confidently branched out onto the favorite perch used by Soren and Skye to watch over the nest. Not long after, Storm explored the opposite side of the nest—an area we hadn’t seen any of the eagles venture to before. With a quick look down to the nest Storm took a short flight back to the nest.

But the biggest surprise was still to come.

Storm decided to launch to the perch again and fledged right before our eyes! It was a moment we won’t soon forget.

What followed was a wave of anticipation. As we dealt with a brief power outage at the nest site, our team searched the area for any sign of Storm, Soren, or Skye—without success. For a moment, it felt like our first nesting season might have ended in a blink.

But our eagles had more in store.

The next day, Soren returned to the nest with food. Still no Storm. Then, two days later, while Soren dropped off another meal, Storm suddenly appeared with a graceful fly-by—then circled back and landed right at the nest to enjoy the meal.

Storm was back. And we were overjoyed!

We’ll continue to keep watch as Storm begins the next phase of life—learning how to hunt, fish, and survive independently. These coming weeks are critical, and while we expect to see Storm visit the nest from time to time, the moment is fast approaching when she’ll leave it behind for good. It’s bittersweet, but just the beginning of her journey in the wild.
